What Is the Purpose of an Ejector Pump?

Even though you may have never heard of an ejector pump until recently, you probably already know how it works if you understand how a sump pump works. Although they are two distinct systems with two separate purposes, both units work to collect water and transfer it out of your property. Whereas sump pumps are designed to get rid of excess water from rain or flooding and simply transfer the water back outside, an ejector pump functions to remove wastewater and is directly connected to the main sewer line or septic system.

An ejector pump is required when the wastewater that needs to be transported is below the level of the main sewer line. This is often the case with bathrooms that are located in the basement of a home.

How Long Do Ejector Pumps Last?

Regardless of how well-made an ejector pump is, it is not designed to last forever. More likely than not, if your home requires a sewer ejector pump, the time will come when your pump fails. When used continually, ejector pumps are usually able to last 7 to 10 years, although some well-maintained systems may last even longer. The lifespan of an ejector pump can significantly decrease when obstructions in discharge lines are ignored to too long. Failure to catch and address a clogged line right away will cause the pump to run non-stop, which can lead to overheating and eventual motor failure.

Signs You Need to Replace Your Ejector Pump

Allowing an ejector pump to fail completely may result in significant damage to your home, as well as some extremely unsanitary conditions. If you have noticed strange noises or odd odors coming from your basement, it may be any issue related to your ejector pump.

It’s important to call a reliable plumber any time you notice signs that it’s time for a new ejector pump, including:

  • You have dirty water running through your plumbing system.
  • Your pump won’t start or struggles to turn on.
  • Your unit continuously cycles.
  • Your system is making strange sounds.
  • Your pump fails to eject an appropriate amount of fluid.
  • Your unit shuts off before emptying the pit.
  • Your system continues to run when the pit is empty.
  • Your ejector pump is over 10 years old.
